Certifications

Fire-rated gypsum wall systems are certified through a rigorous testing and approval process conducted by manufacturers to ensure they meet established safety standards. The process typically begins with the development of the wall system, which includes the gypsum board, framing, and other components like insulation. The manufacturer submits the wall assembly to an accredited third-party laboratory, where it undergoes fire resistance testing based on standards such as SABS ,ASTM E119 or UL 263. During these tests, the assembly is exposed to high temperatures to evaluate its ability to contain fire and prevent it from spreading for a specified period, usually measured in hours.

Once the system successfully passes the testing criteria, the manufacturer is granted a certification or listing, which includes detailed specifications on the construction, installation, and performance characteristics of the wall system. This certification is essential for code compliance in construction projects and ensures that the fire-rated gypsum wall system can be reliably used in building applications requiring fire resistance. The certification process also involves ongoing quality control measures, where the manufacturer must regularly test production samples and maintain compliance with the standards to retain their certification.

Passive fire protection gives you time when it matters

Fire-rated wall and ceiling systems are rated based on their ability to withstand fire exposure for a specific period, typically expressed in hours, without failing. These ratings are determined through standardized fire tests, such as SANS 10177:2 ,ASTM E119 or UL 263, which evaluate the system's structural integrity, ability to prevent fire penetration, and capacity to limit the temperature rise on the non-exposed side.

During testing, the wall or ceiling assembly is constructed according to specific design parameters, including materials like gypsum board, framing, insulation, and any required coatings or sealants. The assembly is then subjected to a controlled fire in a furnace, where it is exposed to high temperatures that simulate real fire conditions. The time it takes for the system to fail, either by allowing fire or excessive heat to pass through or by collapsing, determines its fire rating. Common ratings include 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours, with higher ratings indicating greater fire resistance. These ratings are crucial for building code compliance and ensure that the construction provides adequate protection in the event of a fire.

Passive Fire protection is always on duty

Passive fire protection is a crucial aspect of any building's safety measures. It works silently in the background, always on duty to protect the occupants and the structure from the devastating effects of fire. With its ability to contain and slow down the spread of fire, passive fire protection is an essential investment for any property owner.
